Indian Coffee Origins: Chikmagalur, Coorg & Beyond

Exploring the rich coffee heritage of India's Southern belt.

India's Coffee Heartland

While often overshadowed by Africa or South America, India's coffee heritage is deep and diverse. Most of our coffee grows under a canopy of shade in the Western Ghats, often intercropped with pepper, cardamom, and citrus.

The Big Three

  • Chikmagalur: Often called the birthplace of Indian coffee. It's known for high-altitude Arabicas that are washed to produce a clean, bright cup.
  • Coorg (Kodagu): A region with diverse microclimates producing both excellent Arabica and high-quality Robusta. Coorg coffees often have a distinct spice-like quality.
  • Wayanad: Located in Kerala, this region is a powerhouse for high-quality Robusta, which provides the body and crema for many of our favorite blends.

An Underrated Gem

Indian coffee is unique because it is predominantly shade-grown and hand-picked. This labor-intensive process results in a cup that is often less acidic and more balanced than its global counterparts. At First Sip, we are proud to source directly from these regions, bringing the best of India's plantations to your doorstep.
