Espresso Basics: What You Need to Know

A beginner's guide to the world of concentrated coffee.

What Exactly is Espresso?

Espresso isn't a type of bean; it's a brewing method. It involves forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water through finely-ground coffee under 9 bars of pressure. This results in a concentrated "shot" with an intense flavor and a signature layer of foam called crema.

The Anatomy of a Shot

A typical espresso shot takes about 25–30 seconds to pull. The crema—that golden-brown layer on top—indicates freshness and the presence of healthy coffee oils. Unlike filter coffee, which relies on gravity, espresso uses pressure to emulsify these oils, creating its unique creamy texture.

Consistency is Key

Because the brewing happens so quickly, grind consistency is vital. Even the slightest change in grind size can make a shot taste sour (under-extracted) or bitter (over-extracted). This is why a high-quality burr grinder is an espresso lover's best friend.
