How to Store Coffee for Maximum Freshness

Keep your beans tasting their best with these simple tips.

Protect Your Investment

Freshly roasted coffee is a perishable product. Once the beans leave our roaster, they begin to lose their aromatic oils and flavors. To keep your coffee tasting great, you need to protect it from its four main enemies: air, light, heat, and moisture.

The Best Way to Store

Use an airtight, opaque container. Light and oxygen are the fastest ways to turn your coffee stale. Keep your container in a cool, dry place—a kitchen cupboard is usually perfect. Avoid the refrigerator; while it's cool, the moisture and odors inside can ruin your beans.

Buy Fresh, Buy Small

The best way to ensure freshness is to buy in smaller quantities that you can finish within 2–4 weeks. First Sip ships in resealable bags equipped with a one-way valve, which allows gases to escape while preventing oxygen from entering.

Grind Just in Time

Finally, the most impactful thing you can do for freshness is to buy whole beans and grind them just before you brew. Once coffee is ground, its surface area increases drastically, accelerating the staling process. A few seconds of grinding makes all the difference in the final cup.
